Abstract
To clarify the effects of vitamin A, vitamin E and 2-acetylaminofluorene(AAF) on the composition of serum lipoproteins, major lipoproteins such as VLDL, LDL and HDL were prepared from the sera of rats pretreated with vitamin A, vitamin E and AAF. The contents of protein, cholesterol and triglyceride in each class of lipoprotein were determined analyzing the lipoproteins by sodium dodecylsulfate gel electrophoresis. Injection of AAF resulted in slight decrease in LDL, slight decrease in HDL protein content, and decrease in triglyceride content in VLDL and HDL. Administration of vitamin A for 4 weeks brought slight increase, in the protein content in VLDL, marked decrease in the cholesterol content in LDL and HDL, and also prominent decrease in triglyceride content in VLDL, LDL and HDL. Administration of vitamin E resulted in marked increase of protein content in HDL, marked decrease of cholesterol content in LDL and HDL, and decrease of trigly ceride content in VLDL and HDL. It is, therefore, considered to be possible to reduce the cholesterol level in serum by administration of vitamin A or vitamin E.
